About Early Jewel Persimmon

The Early Jewel (often coded as H-118 or marketed as "Prairie Star") is a highly regarded American persimmon variety prized for its large, reddish-orange fruit and exceptionally early ripening window, typically ready for harvest in September. It was developed by the renowned breeder James Claypool in Illinois as part of his prolific search for superior persimmons, resulting from a cross between the 'Juhl' and 'George' varieties. This cultivar is particularly noted for being "precocious," meaning the trees are uniquely vigorous and capable of bearing sweet, high-quality fruit at a much younger age than most other varieties.

Flavor Profile

Early Jewel offers a classic, intensely rich flavor with notes of caramel and brown sugar, often rated as superior to milder varieties (like 'Prok') due to its higher sugar content and notably smooth, grit-free texture.

Uses

Early Jewel is best enjoyed fresh out of hand due to its sweet, luscious flesh, though its high-quality, often seedless pulp is also perfect for drying into fruit leather or baking into traditional puddings, breads, and cookies.
